It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Scott Schoneberg, a beloved educator, mentor, coach, and friend whose impact on the Des Moines community will never be forgotten.
Scott dedicated his life to shaping young minds through his work with Des Moines Public Schools, where he served as a respected and passionate science teacher at Central Academy. Teaching subjects ranging from Chemistry and Physics to Environmental Science, Computer Science, and AP Research, he inspired curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine love of learning in countless students. He was the kind of teacher every student hopes for — patient, engaging, and deeply committed to helping others succeed.
Beyond the classroom, Scott’s influence extended onto the track and into the lives of fellow coaches and colleagues. He was not only a mentor but a role model — someone who led with integrity, kindness, and quiet strength. Those who had the privilege of working alongside him remember not just what he taught, but how he lived: with passion, generosity, and an unwavering belief in others.
Scott was also a devoted husband to JoBeth, a loving father to Sara and Peter, and a proud grandfather who found immense joy in family life. Whether he was spending time with loved ones, going for a run, or playing music on his ukulele, he embraced life with a spirit that was both joyful and grounded. His warmth and sense of humor left lasting impressions on everyone he met.
The loss of someone like Scott is deeply felt across the Hoover, Roosevelt, and greater Des Moines Public Schools community. His legacy lives on in the countless students he inspired, the athletes he coached, and the colleagues he uplifted throughout his career.
To the Schoneberg family, we extend our heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in the memories you shared and in the knowledge that Scott’s life made a meaningful difference in so many others.
Scott Schoneberg will be remembered not only for what he taught, but for who he was — a remarkable man who gave so much of himself to others. His influence will continue to live on in the lives he touched.
Rest peacefully.
